Maintaining Your Outdoor Furniture

In recent years, outdoor living spaces have become very popular. The furniture decorating these areas are typically quite durable, but most will need regular maintenance due to exposure to the elements. One way to keep outdoor furniture looking and functioning their best, is by washing the items frequently. Dirt that has settled can cause metals to corrode, while causing plastics and fabrics to lose color. Wash at the beginning of each outdoor season, typically at the beginning of summer.

Dust furniture first, then wash in mild detergent mixed with water and dry thoroughly. Check all fastenings and tighten any that have come loose. Replace any missing, broken or rusted pieces with rustproof ones made of weatherproof material. All hinges should be lubricated with silicone instead of oil because oil can cake and attract dirt. The material the furniture is made from determines additional care. Furniture made from aluminum resists rust but needs to be protected from pitting that can give the metal a dull appearance. Frequent washings can help prevent this condition if it is in good shape or has a baked-on finish. If the metal is already in poor condition, more frequent washings will be required to revive it.

For aluminum furniture in poor condition, scrub briskly with steel wool. Ideally, aluminum outdoor furniture should be washed and waxed every few months. Plastic or resin is very durable and weather resistant. It can withstand the elements and frequent general wear and tear of outdoor use. Resin furnishings are easily stored because the pieces can usually be broken down or stacked to utilize less space. Most soil and stains are cleaned off easily with a mild cleaner or polish. You can even wipe down plastic furnishings with warm soap and water as long as you remember to rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, clean cloth. Redwood furniture is extremely attractive to the eye and is not likely to rot or warp, though it can split and almost surely turn grey within a year if not properly cared for.

Stains and sealers are available to help prevent discoloration. Wash furniture and replace any broken, rusted or missing fastenings before staining or applying sealer. All exposed parts will need to be sanded with a No. 150 or 180 grit sandpaper. Dust, and wipe with a rag that has been lightly moistened in paint thinner. Finally, apply one or two coats of water repellent sealer that is especially made for redwood. Wicker furniture is weather resistant but easily dried out in the sun, therefore is best kept in the shade. Once a year, soak the furniture in water to restore moisture. Undamaged wicker can simply be washed and refinished with lemon oil furniture polish. Wrought iron can remain attractive for many years if it’s touched up whenever bare metal is exposed.

Use a rust-resistant metal primer on these areas to prevent rust from spreading under paint. With regular maintenance your outdoor furniture can remain attractive and functional for many years to come!
